A supply chain refers to the coming together of all the components of a product, the manufacturing of the product, and the delivery of the product to consumers. The chain may begin with the factory that manufactures nuts and bolts. Those nuts and bolts are loaded into a parcel delivery truck that takes them to the train station. The freight train then delivers them to the factory where they are put into a box that holds a bicycle heading to a chain of nationwide department stores. The bicycles are loaded onto another truck that is heading to a distribution center five hundred miles away. From the distribution center, the bicycles are divided into four groups. Each group will go to a different store where some will be assembled for display and others will be left in their boxes until they are purchased by a consumer.
