When MasterCard was first formed by United California Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, Crocker National Bank and the Bank of California in 1966, it was deemed as a competitor for the VISA credit card of Visa Inc. Then known as ‘Master Charge: The Interbank Card’, it received a shot in the shoulder when First National City Bank merged its Everything Card with Master Charge. By 1979, it was rechristened as MasterCard.
